Introducing Simon: Code, craft & clean silhouettes

In this interview, he shares what excites him about Centi, the lessons he's bringing from Klarna and Pleo, and why black-on-black just works.

You recently joined as a Senior Full-Stack Engineer. What excites you about working at Centi?

There’s a lot that excites me about Centi—the opportunity to be part of a small, talented team, the ability to shape both the product and the company’s direction, and the challenge of simplifying equity ownership, which is inherently complex. Being in such an early stage means each of us carries significant responsibility, but I thrive in a demanding role.

Before this, you worked at Netlight and with fintech companies like Klarna and Pleo. What lessons do you bring to Centi?

Through my experiences at Netlight, Klarna, and Pleo, I’ve learned the importance of balancing speed, quality, and impact in building products.

One key lesson is choosing the right technologies to empower teams to be productive and expressive, removing as much friction as possible from idea to execution. The ability to iterate quickly without being slowed down by unnecessary complexity & boilerplate is critical to shipping fast while maintaining quality.

At the same time, fintech products require a high degree of diligence in certain areas—some things simply cannot go wrong without significantly impacting customers and the business. This is especially true when handling financial data, reporting, and compliance with regulations like GDPR, PSD2, and IFRS. Accuracy and auditability are critical, as even small errors can lead to financial discrepancies, regulatory issues, or loss of customer trust. The challenge is knowing where to be flexible and where to be uncompromising. I’ve learned that a great way to strike this balance is by designing systems that make it difficult to do the wrong thing—whether that’s through automated checks, reconciliation processes, or implementing thoughtful guardrails that protect both the team and the end users.

Finally, I’ve seen how successful teams integrate business impact and customer obsession into their tech and product decisions. It’s not just about building efficiently—it’s about ensuring that every feature provides real value. This means constantly weighing effort against customer impact and cost savings, designing solutions that work for both small and large firms, and making the product as intuitive and accessible as possible.

Word is, you’re giving some serious competition for Centi’s best-dressed Dundie award. Any style philosophy you live by?

Seeing me dress day-to-day you would think its just “everything has to be black” hehe. But to me it’s more challenging gender norms through clothing, fun asymmetries & silhouettes. Most (but not all!) of the clothes & brands I find and enjoy that fit this criteria just happens to be black, and you can’t blame me because the color black pairs very well with black.

Outside of coding and fashion, what inspires you creatively?

I find creative inspiration in a lot of things; music, art, movies, architecture, tattoos. But, as cheesy as it may sound, the biggest source of inspiration for me is people. The works themselves are captivating, but what truly fascinates me is the creative minds behind them—their stories, their perspectives, and the way they channel their experiences into something tangible. There’s something deeply inspiring about understanding the thought process and emotions that go into creating something meaningful.

What do you do when you’re not building stuff at Centi?

Hanging out with my girlfriend and our two guinea pigs Puff & Popcorn, going to the gym, hanging out with friends. I have some open-source projects I’m tinkering on from time to time, but I’ve been consistently been successful losing interests when I’m about 90% done with the project.

Finally, what are you most excited about looking ahead?

The vast landscape of opportunities that exists at Centi; there’s so many impactful challenges ahead that I cannot wait to tackle with my amazing colleagues. Also spring & summer so that I can revive my summer outfits.
